A Treatment Model for Sexually Abused Preschoolers

This article describes a structured, short-term treatment model for sexually abused preschool children (ages 3-6 years) and their primary (nonperpetrator) caretakers. The theoretical basis for this model is discussed. The general structure and format of this approach are presented, and specific interventions for the child and parent are described. Although empirical data regarding the efficacy of this approach are not yet available, a clinical instrument for monitoring the progress of symptomatic change is presented. The need for empirical treatment outcome studies for this and other therapeutic interventions for sexually abused children is also addressed.
