Priming Macho Attitudes and Emotions

Effects of reading one of four prime stories (control, consenting sex, rape, family) on 173 undergraduate males' evaluations of and emotional reactions to two videotaped date rape scenarios were investigated. Subjects were grouped according to level of hypermasculinity and prime. Dependent measures were perceived degree of male and female responsibility, perceived degree of force, proposed length of prison sentence, likelihood of similar behavior, and subjectively rated empathy and anger. Results supported the concept of a macho personality and revealed interactive effects for both the rape and family prime, each amplifying hypermasculine effects.
